What is a nuc?

A nuc, short for nucleus colony, is a small, self-contained bee colony that includes a queen bee, worker bees, and usually some brood (young bees at various stages of development). Nucs are commonly used in beekeeping as a way to start a new hive or replace a queen in an existing hive.

Nucs are typically housed in a smaller box or hive, often a 5-frame nuc box, and are easier to handle and transport than full-sized hives. They are also less expensive than purchasing a full-sized hive.

Nucs can be used to increase the number of hives a beekeeper has, introduce new genetics into a hive, or provide a quick solution if a hive loses its queen. They are also a popular way for beginner beekeepers to start beekeeping, as they offer a smaller, more manageable colony to learn with.

Overall, nucs are a versatile and valuable tool in beekeeping that can help beekeepers manage and grow their colonies effectively.
